UNIQUE DESIGN EXPERIENCE AT CODE
CODE09 - Scandinavia's first design fair with the very best within design, furniture, interiors, textiles, lighting and architecture - is fast approaching. Here are some of the things you can expect to experience when the doors open to a unique design experience at the end of August (27-30 August 2009).

CODE09 is a key element in Denmark's first international design week.

PLASTIC BOTTLES KEEP OUT THE RAIN
Practicals from Dyberg-Larsen are smart, lightweight trench coats, produced from old plastic bottles.

Light, water-repellent and, not least, good for the environment. The Practicals trench coat series from Dyberg-Larsen is made of 95 per cent recycled materials, with crushed plastic bottles making up the bulk.

Practicals is a 'green' and elegant idea for a neat raincoat and combined trench coat for city living or for people on the go where a shower or two mustn't spoil the mood.

When not in use, the Practicals coat can be folded up so it almost takes up no space at all. It neatly fits into the small accompanying bag. Or kept in your handbag or the glove compartment of your car.

Practicals has been developed by the London designer Emma Jeffs for Dyberg-Larsen in Asperup on Funen. The idea for Practicals literally fell from the sky: it rains more than 150 days a year in London!

DANISH DESIGN IN LAKE WOOD
Beneath the surface of Lake Kenyir in Malaysia lies the Kenyir valley. Here, mahogany and acacia trees have lain submerged since 1978. Only recently have people become aware of the fantastic wood species which for the past 30 years have stood protected against pollution and exploitation.

Encouraged by the Malaysian government, the Thye Hing Sawmill has now started the extremely tricky task of clearing the lake. The government wants to boost the lake' commercial uses, which is currently severely restricted by the old trunks which in many places interrupt the lake's smooth surface. The Thye Hing Sawmill employs Thai pearl divers equipped with pneumatic chainsaws and barges to carefully fell and ship the fabulous trees to the sawmill. Here the timber is given new life as beautiful planks. As the wood is dead through flooding, it is not subjected to the same reactions which trees normally undergo when they are felled. This means that the lake wood is far more dimensionally stable and consequently very suitable for furniture, verandas and wood flooring.

Lake Wood is a Danish-owned furniture company established by Allan Lundberg, a timber merchant, and the designer Benjamin Salomon.

NEW DESIGN CONCEPT PRESENTED AT CODE
For the first time ever, the Norwegian visual artist Hilde A. Danielsen's Transparent tile wall concept is being exhibited at a design fair. The concept is a development project in the borderland between art, design and architecture and consists of pattern-perforated ceramic building modules which can be built up to produce sculptural tile walls. The tile sculptures can be used as partition walls/room dividers and integrated in architecture or landscapes. Each tile wall is planned by the artist and adapted to specific rooms, again in collaboration with the artist.

The transparent tile walls are a complex and paradoxical idea, a break away from the usual weight and solidity of most materials. The concept challenges the conventional picture of what a brick wall is, physically and mentally. The perforations create space for light, air, colours and life through the wall, which can be designed with different degrees of transparency. Thus, the wall becomes an extension of the room.

WATCHES WITH DISTINCTIVE PERSONALITIES
Rado is a Swiss watch make which started producing its own watches in 1957. Only five years later, in 1962, Rado presented its Rado Diastar series, and demonstrated its ability to create watches with distinctive personalities and unmistakable Rado characteristics. Diastar only marked the start; in 1986 Rado was the first watch manufacturer to produce ceramic watches with the birth of the Ceramica series. This technology showed that Rado was ahead of its time and a company that dared to pursue its own path. Today Rado is fully committed to design, and its collaboration with the well-known designer Jasper Morrison has shown how a designer interprets Rado. Jasper Morrison has designed the packaging, face and a watch called r5.5 - please see attached photo.

Over the years, Rado has won numerous design and innovation awards, and today Rado fans loyally follow the brand via its RadoStar.com site and www.rado.com
