CODE09 IS ON ITS WAY The first signs of spring are slowly emerging outside Bella Center's doors. Temperatures are on the way up, and small green shoots are rising from the ground.
Inside, the sales team behind Scandinavia's first design fair - COpenhagen DEsign 09 - is waging a campaign to spread the message about good design. CODE09 invites you to visit Bella Center from 27-30 August. The trade fair is being held at the same time as CPH Design Week and INDEX:, and is therefore helping to put Denmark in the limelight as a design nation.
Five design areas will be in focus during the first CODE09 in Bella Center: NORDIC SELECTED, FURNITURE/INTERIOR, GALLERY, SUSTAINABLE DESIGN and DESIGNBOOM.
- Given the ideas behind CODE09, I think we have really succeeded in presenting a completely new concept for an optimum design experience. Basically, we have said goodbye to the traditional exhibition window, explains exhibition manager Lone Ann Disch, and adds:
- At the time of writing we have 84 companies, so, five months before the doors open, we are able to sleep soundly at night as everything indicates the fair will be a success.
More and more people are supporting CODE09, which offers a concept that is endeavouring to fulfil some of the industry's many wishes:
* The City of Copenhagen must be involved * To offer something that distinguishes CODE09 from other fairs * Shuttle bus connection to the city's distinctive design showrooms * Committed efforts of everyone involved
- It is wonderful that Copenhagen, for the first time ever, is collaborating to re-establish Denmark on the map as a design nation. In shaping the CODE09 concept we have taken a fresh approach and always borne in mind that it must be a design experience. Consequently, the idea with the shuttle buses is vital - even though all the showrooms are represented in the exhibition halls, says Lone Ann Disch.
CODE09 SELECTS THE SELECTED CODE09 offers a wealth of design experiences - including the special exhibition 'Nordic Selected', which is a completely unique design competition that honours outstanding Nordic design.
Ten curators from the five Nordic countries have nominated no fewer than 130 products within graphic-, industrial-, interactive- and architectural design.
- We have just sent letters to the nominated companies and, to put it mildly, they feel honoured to be among those who have been selected. The plan is that all the nominated designs will be exhibited. On the second day of the fair, the winner of the 'Nordic Selected Award' will be announced, explains Lone Ann Disch.
DESIGNBOOM FOR ALL DESIGNBOOM will be visiting CODE09. With more than two million readers each month in more than 165 countries, designboom.com is the leading publication with current topics and a critical angle on all aspects of design, creative professionals, sectors and society at large. designboom.com, which is based in Milan, offers snapshot accounts from the large international design shows, architectural and art exhibitions, and interviews with and portraits of those heavily involved in the current creative scene: design stories and in-depth information about the creators of design classics.
At CODE09, the international design organisation Designboom is presenting a mart exhibition with 35 international design talents. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to meet the young avant-gardists and become acquainted with their work. At the same time, the fair gives the designers the opportunity to meet their customers, manufacturers, distributors, the media and museum curators.
NEW NAMES AT CODE09 CODE09's exhibitor list is growing steadily - and interesting exhibitors are continuously being added.
ferm LIVING, which has previously exhibited in New York, is one of the exciting Danish companies to have said yes to CODE09. ferm LIVING designs and produces lifestyle products such as wallpaper, wall stickers and textiles for the home.
- Our products are intended for people who are interested in design, and who welcome a slightly bold approach when furnishing their homes, says the designer Trine Andersen, creative manager at ferm LIVING.
Inspiration comes from many sources: fashion, nature, architecture, flea markets, globetrotting etc.
Trine has an eye for retro design and elements taken from nature which are reinterpreted to produce clean and modern design. By combining fashion, functionality and graphic design, ferm LIVING has designed products that bring fashion into every home.
It will also be possible to meet Krabbesholm Højskole, which will be visiting CODE09 with an exhibition based around the school's own brand-new exhibition facility.
Krabbesholm has commissioned the young Japanese firm of architects Atelier Bow-Wow to design a new exhibition building for the school. Atelier Bow-Wow's design for Krabbesholm is being built this spring and will be furnished with 30 stools. The stools are the result of a competition which the school held in collaboration with the furniture manufacturer PP Møbler. The competition is aimed at present and former students at the school, and the winning stool will be presented at CODE09 together with the proposals from the competition's ten finalists. The winning stool will be made of oak and product developed and manufactured by PP Møbler.
In addition, Atelier Bow-Wow shows a selection of its other groundbreaking designs at CODE09.
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is one of the many new exhibitors presenting their ideas for sustainable design when CODE09 opens its doors in August.
DTU trains engineers who design items of all sizes from millimetres to kilometres. A common aspect of engineering design is that it rests on a solid technical-scientific foundation, and that the starting point for the design is the application of technology. In this way, technical solutions are created where there is a marriage of innovation and functionality.
At CODE09, DTU will present an innovative surgical instrument which is easier to hold for the surgeon. New ideas for sustainable transport and sustainable construction components, buildings and cities will also be shown.
COPENHAGEN DESIGN WEEK - a vital design event in a changing world - Copenhagen Design Week presents design with meaning - ideas, concepts, products and services which will play a decisive role in both your professional and private life.
In 2009, Copenhagen Design Week will explore social and environmentally friendly design and innovation. It will offer a rich mix of trade fairs, exhibitions, events, debates and networking. Each element will challenge the positive forces in design in different ways, inspiring both businesses and individuals. Copenhagen Design Week runs from 27 August to 6 September 2009. The website is now open and can be seen her
